Cruising the Rivers
Leaving Chicago we started our month long, 1,534 Nautical Mile journey down the river system to Mobile, Alabama.
We were pleasantly surprised how much we enjoyed the diversity of our travels through six states, Illinois, Missouri, Kentucky, Tennessee, Mississippi and Alabama.

Lake Michigan
We entered back in the US on Drummond Island Michigan and then spent two weeks traveling 277 NM (319 Miles) down the west shore of Lake Michigan to Chicago. Each day we traveled approximately 50 miles staying in small towns along the way.

Over 100 Locks and counting…
One of the necessary parts of navigating the Great Loop is the needed passage through locks. The exact number you will pass is dependent on the exact route you take. At a minimum loopers will pass through 100 locks spread across the different canal and river systems.
